27  Πρωίας Of morning δὲ butγενομένης having occurredσυμβούλιον counsel togetherἔλαβον tookπάντες allοἱ theἀρχιερεῖς chief priestsκαὶ andοἱ theπρεσβύτεροι older menτοῦ of theλαοῦ peopleκατὰ down onτοῦ theἸησοῦ Jesusὥστε as-andθανατῶσαι to put to deathαὐτόν· him; 2  καὶ and δήσαντες having boundαὐτὸν himἀπήγαγον they led offκαὶ andπαρέδωκαν gave overΠειλάτῳ to Pilateτῷ theἡγεμόνι. governor. 3  Τότε Then ἰδὼν having seenἸούδας Judasthe (one)παραδοὺς having given overαὐτὸν himὅτι thatκατεκρίθη he was judged downμεταμεληθεὶς having felt remorseἔστρεψεν turned backτὰ theτριάκοντα thirtyἀργύρια silver [pieces]τοῖς to theἀρχιερεῦσιν chief priestsκαὶ andπρεσβυτέροις older men 4  λέγων saying Ἥμαρτον I sinnedπαραδοὺς having given overαἷμα bloodδίκαιον. righteous.οἱ The (ones)δὲ butεἶπαν saidΤί Whatπρὸς towardἡμᾶς; us?σὺ YOUὄψῃ. will see. 5  καὶ And ῥίψας having castτὰ theἀργύρια silver [pieces]εἰς intoτὸν theναὸν divine habitationἀνεχώρησεν, he withdrew,καὶ andἀπελθὼν having gone offἀπήγξατο. he hanged himself. 6  Οἱ The δὲ butἀρχιερεῖς chief priestsλαβόντες having takenτὰ theἀργύρια silver [pieces]εἶπαν saidΟὐκ Notἔξεστιν it is allowedβαλεῖν to throwαὐτὰ themεἰς intoτὸν theκορβανᾶν, sacred treasure,ἐπεὶ sinceτιμὴ priceαἵματός of bloodἐστιν· it is; 7  συμβούλιον counsel together δὲ butλαβόντες having takenἠγόρασαν they boughtἐξ out ofαὐτῶν themτὸν the᾿Αγρὸν Fieldτοῦ of theΚεραμέως Potterεἰς intoταφὴν burialτοῖς to theξένοις. strangers. 8  διὸ Through which ἐκλήθη was calledtheἀγρὸς fieldἐκεῖνος that᾿Αγρὸς FieldΑἵματος of Bloodἕως tillτῆς theσήμερον. today. 9  Τότε Then ἐπληρώθη was fulfilledτὸ the (thing)ῥηθὲν spokenδιὰ throughἸερεμίου Jeremiahτοῦ theπροφήτου prophetλέγοντος sayingΚαὶ Andἔλαβον they tookτὰ theτριάκοντα thirtyἀργύρια, silver [pieces],τὴν theτιμὴν priceτοῦ of the (one)τετιμημένου having been pricedὃν whomἐτιμήσαντο they pricedἀπὸ fromυἱῶν sonsἸσραήλ, of Israel, 10  καὶ and ἔδωκαν they gaveαὐτὰ themεἰς intoτὸν theἀγρὸν fieldτοῦ of theκεραμέως, potter,καθὰ according to what thingsσυνέταξέν orderedμοι to meΚύριος. Lord. 11  The δὲ butἸησοῦς Jesusἐστάθη stoodἔμπροσθεν in frontτοῦ of theἡγεμόνος· governor;καὶ andἐπηρώτησεν inquired uponαὐτὸν himtheἡγεμὼν governorλέγων sayingΣὺ Youεἶ aretheβασιλεὺς kingτῶν of theἸουδαίων; Jews?Theδὲ butἸησοῦς Jesusἔφη saidΣὺ Youλέγεις. you are saying. 12  καὶ And ἐν inτῷ theκατηγορεῖσθαι to be accusedαὐτὸν himὑπὸ byτῶν theἀρχιερέων chief priestsκαὶ andπρεσβυτέρων older menοὐδὲν nothingἀπεκρίνατο. he answered. 13  τότε Then λέγει is sayingαὐτῷ to himtheΠειλᾶτος PilateΟὐκ Notἀκούεις you are hearingπόσα how many (things)σου of youκαταμαρτυροῦσιν; they are testifying against? 14  καὶ And οὐκ notἀπεκρίθη he answeredαὐτῷ to himπρὸς towardοὐδὲ not-butἓν oneῥῆμα, saying,ὥστε as-andθαυμάζειν to be wonderingτὸν theἡγεμόνα governorλίαν. very much. 15  Κατὰ According to δὲ butἑορτὴν festivalεἰώθει was accustomedtheἡγεμὼν governorἀπολύειν to releaseἕνα oneτῷ to theὄχλῳ crowdδέσμιον bound oneὃν whomἤθελον. they were wanting. 16  εἶχον They were having δὲ butτότε thenδέσμιον bound oneἐπίσημον notoriousλεγόμενον being saidΒαραββᾶν. Barabbas. 17  συνηγμένων Having been led together οὖν thereforeαὐτῶν of themεἶπεν saidαὐτοῖς to themtheΠειλᾶτος PilateΤίνα Whomθέλετε are you willingἀπολύσω I should releaseὑμῖν, to YOU,τὸν theΒαραββᾶν BarabbasorἸησοῦν Jesusτὸν theλεγόμενον being saidΧριστόν; Christ? 18  ᾔδει He had known γὰρ forὅτι thatδιὰ throughφθόνον envyπαρέδωκαν they gave overαὐτόν. him. 19  Καθημένου Sitting δὲ butαὐτοῦ of himἐπὶ uponτοῦ theβήματος judgment seatἀπέστειλεν sent offπρὸς towardαὐτὸν himtheγυνὴ womanαὐτοῦ of himλέγουσα sayingΜηδὲν Nothingσοὶ to youκαὶ andτῷ to theδικαίῳ righteous (one)ἐκείνῳ, that,πολλὰ many (things)γὰρ forἔπαθον I sufferedσήμερον todayκατ’ according toὄναρ dreamδι’ throughαὐτόν. him. 20  Οἱ The δὲ butἀρχιερεῖς chief priestsκαὶ andοἱ theπρεσβύτεροι older menἔπεισαν persuadedτοὺς theὄχλους crowdsἵνα in order thatαἰτήσωνται they should ask forτὸν theΒαραββᾶν Barabbasτὸν theδὲ butἸησοῦν Jesusἀπολέσωσιν. should they destroy. 21  ἀποκριθεὶς Having answered δὲ buttheἡγεμὼν governorεἶπεν saidαὐτοῖς to themΤίνα Whomθέλετε are YOU willingἀπὸ fromτῶν theδύο twoἀπολύσω I should releaseὑμῖν; to YOU?οἱ The (ones)δὲ butεἶπαν saidΤὸν TheΒαραββᾶν. Barabbas. 22  λέγει Is saying αὐτοῖς to themtheΠειλᾶτος PilateΤί Whatοὖν thereforeποιήσω shall I makeἸησοῦν Jesusτὸν theλεγόμενον being saidΧριστόν; Christ?λέγουσιν They are sayingπάντες allΣταυρωθήτω. Let him be put on the stake. 23  The (one) δὲ butἔφη saidΤί Whatγὰρ forκακὸν bad (things)ἐποίησεν; did he do?οἱ The (ones)δὲ butπερισσῶς abundantlyἔκραζον were crying outλέγοντες sayingΣταυρωθήτω. Let him be put on the stake. 24  ἰδὼν Having seen δὲ buttheΠειλᾶτος Pilateὅτι thatοὐδὲν nothingὠφελεῖ benefitsἀλλὰ butμᾶλλον ratherθόρυβος uproarγίνεται is occurringλαβὼν having takenὕδωρ waterἀπενίψατο he washed offτὰς theχεῖρας handsκατέναντι down oppositeτοῦ theὄχλου crowdλέγων saying᾿Αθῷός Innocentεἰμι I amἀπὸ fromτοῦ theαἵματος bloodτούτου· of this (one);ὑμεῖς YOUὄψεσθε. YOU will see. 25  καὶ And ἀποκριθεὶς having answeredπᾶς alltheλαὸς peopleεἶπεν saidΤὸ Theαἷμα bloodαὐτοῦ of himἐφ’ uponἡμᾶς usκαὶ andἐπὶ uponτὰ theτέκνα childrenἡμῶν. of us. 26  τότε Then ἀπέλυσεν he releasedαὐτοῖς to themτὸν theΒαραββᾶν, Barabbas,τὸν theδὲ butἸησοῦν Jesusφραγελλώσας having whippedπαρέδωκεν he gave overἵνα in order thatσταυρωθῇ. he might be put on the stake. 27  Τότε Then οἱ theστρατιῶται soldiersτοῦ of theἡγεμόνος governorπαραλαβόντες having taken alongτὸν theἸησοῦν Jesusεἰς intoτὸ theπραιτώριον prætoriumσυνήγαγον led togetherἐπ’ uponαὐτὸν himὅλην wholeτὴν theσπεῖραν. body of troops. 28  καὶ And ἐκδύσαντες having disrobedαὐτὸν himχλαμύδα cloakκοκκίνην scarletπεριέθηκαν they placed aroundαὐτῷ, him, 29  καὶ and πλέξαντες having braidedστέφανον crownἐξ out ofἀκανθῶν thornsἐπέθηκαν they imposedἐπὶ uponτῆς theκεφαλῆς headαὐτοῦ of himκαὶ andκάλαμον reedἐν inτῇ theδεξιᾷ right [hand]αὐτοῦ, of him,καὶ andγονυπετήσαντες having kneltἔμπροσθεν in frontαὐτοῦ of himἐνέπαιξαν they made fun ofαὐτῷ himλέγοντες sayingΧαῖρε, Be rejoicing,βασιλεῦ kingτῶν of theἸουδαίων, Jews, 30  καὶ and ἐμπτύσαντες having spit onεἰς intoαὐτὸν himἔλαβον they tookτὸν theκάλαμον reedκαὶ andἔτυπτον were hittingεἰς intoτὴν theκεφαλὴν headαὐτοῦ. of him. 31  καὶ And ὅτε whenἐνέπαιξαν they made fun ofαὐτῷ, him,ἐξέδυσαν they took offαὐτὸν himτὴν theχλαμύδα cloakκαὶ andἐνέδυσαν put onαὐτὸν himτὰ theἱμάτια outer garmentsαὐτοῦ, of him,καὶ andἀπήγαγον they led offαὐτὸν himεἰς intoτὸ theσταυρῶσαι. to be put on the stake. 32  ᾿Εξερχόμενοι Going out δὲ butεὗρον they foundἄνθρωπον manΚυρηναῖον Cyrenianὀνόματι to nameΣίμωνα· Simon;τοῦτον this (one)ἠγγάρευσαν they impressed into serviceἵνα in order thatἄρῃ he might lift upτὸν theσταυρὸν stakeαὐτοῦ. of him. 33  Καὶ And ἐλθόντες having comeεἰς intoτόπον placeλεγόμενον being saidΓολγοθά, Golgotha,whichἐστιν isΚρανίου of SkullΤόπος Placeλεγόμενος, being said, 34  ἔδωκαν they gave αὐτῷ to himπιεῖν to drinkοἶνον wineμετὰ withχολῆς gallμεμιγμένον· having been mixed;καὶ andγευσάμενος having tastedοὐκ notἠθέλησεν he willedπιεῖν. to drink. 35  σταυρώσαντες Having put on the stake δὲ butαὐτόν himδιεμερίσαντο they distributedτὰ theἱμάτια outer garmentsαὐτοῦ of himβάλλοντες throwingκλῆρον, lot, 36  καὶ and καθήμενοι sittingἐτήρουν they were observingαὐτὸν himἐκεῖ. there. 37  καὶ And ἐπέθηκαν they put uponἐπάνω aboveτῆς theκεφαλῆς headαὐτοῦ of himτὴν theαἰτίαν chargeαὐτοῦ of himγεγραμμένην having been writtenΟὗτός This (one)ἐστιν isἸησοῦς JesustheΒασιλεὺς Kingτῶν of theἸουδαίων. Jews. 38  Τότε Then σταυροῦνται are put on stakesσὺν together withαὐτῷ himδύο twoλῃσταί, robbers,εἷς oneἐκ out ofδεξιῶν right-hand [parts]καὶ andεἷς oneἐξ out ofεὐωνύμων. left-hand [parts]. 39  Οἱ The (ones) δὲ butπαραπορευόμενοι passing alongἐβλασφήμουν were blasphemingαὐτὸν himκινοῦντες movingτὰς theκεφαλὰς headsαὐτῶν of them 40  καὶ and λέγοντες sayingThe (one)καταλύων loosing downτὸν theναὸν divine habitationκαὶ andἐν inτρισὶν threeἡμέραις daysοἰκοδομῶν, building,σῶσον saveσεαυτόν· yourself;εἰ ifυἱὸς sonεἶ you areτοῦ of theθεοῦ, God,κατάβηθι come downἀπὸ fromτοῦ theσταυροῦ. stake. 41  ὁμοίως Likewise καὶ alsoοἱ theἀρχιερεῖς chief priestsἐμπαίζοντες making fun ofμετὰ withτῶν theγραμματέων scribesκαὶ andπρεσβυτέρων older menἔλεγον were saying 42  Ἄλλους Others ἔσωσεν, he saved,ἑαυτὸν himselfοὐ notδύναται he is ableσῶσαι· to save;βασιλεὺς kingἸσραήλ of Israelἐστιν, he is,καταβάτω let him come downνῦν nowἀπὸ fromτοῦ theσταυροῦ stakeκαὶ andπιστεύσομεν we will believeἐπ’ uponαὐτόν. him. 43  Πέποιθεν He has trusted ἐπὶ uponτὸν theθεόν, God,ῥυσάσθω let him rescueνῦν nowεἰ ifθέλει he is willingαὐτόν· him;εἶπεν he saidγὰρ forὅτι thatΘεοῦ of Godεἰμὶ I amυἱός. Son. 44  τὸ The δ’ butαὐτὸ very (thing)καὶ alsoοἱ theλῃσταὶ robbersοἱ the (ones)συνσταυρωθέντες put on stakes togetherσὺν together withαὐτῷ himὠνείδιζον were reproachingαὐτόν. him. 45  ᾿Απὸ From δὲ butἕκτης sixthὥρας hourσκότος darknessἐγένετο occurredἐπὶ uponπᾶσαν allτὴν theγῆν earthἕως tillὥρας hourἐνάτης. ninth. 46  περὶ About δὲ butτὴν theἐνάτην ninthὥραν hourἐβόησεν called outtheἸησοῦς Jesusφωνῇ to voiceμεγάλῃ greatλέγων saying᾿Ελωί Eloiἐλωί eloiλεμὰ lemaσαβαχθανεί; sabachthani?τοῦτ’ thisἔστιν isΘεέ Godμου of meθεέ Godμου, of me,ἵνα in order thatτί whatμε meἐγκατέλιπες; left you down in? 47  τινὲς Some δὲ butτῶν of the (ones)ἐκεῖ thereἑστηκότων having stoodἀκούσαντες having heardἔλεγον were sayingὅτι thatἨλείαν Elijahφωνεῖ is sounding forοὗτος. this (one). 48  καὶ And εὐθέως immediatelyδραμὼν having runεἷς oneἐξ out ofαὐτῶν themκαὶ andλαβὼν having takenσπόγγον spongeπλήσας having filledτε andὄξους of sour wineκαὶ andπεριθεὶς having put aboutκαλάμῳ reedἐπότιζεν he was causing to drinkαὐτόν. him. 49  οἱ The δὲ butλοιποὶ leftover (ones)εἶπαν saidἌφες Let go offἴδωμεν let us seeεἰ ifἔρχεται is comingἨλείας Elijahσώσων to saveαὐτόν. him.[[ἄλλος [[Anotherδὲ butλαβὼν having takenλόγχην spearἔνυξεν piercedαὐτοῦ of himτὴν theπλευράν, side,καὶ andἐξῆλθεν came outὕδωρ waterκαὶ andαἷμα.]] blood.]] 50  The δὲ butἸησοῦς Jesusπάλιν againκράξας having cried outφωνῇ to voiceμεγάλῃ greatἀφῆκεν he let go offτὸ theπνεῦμα. spirit. 51  Καὶ And ἰδοὺ look!τὸ theκαταπέτασμα curtainτοῦ of theναοῦ divine habitationἐσχίσθη was splitἀπ’ fromἄνωθεν aboveἕως tillκάτω belowεἰς intoδύο, two,καὶ andtheγῆ earthἐσείσθη, was shaken,καὶ andαἱ theπέτραι rock-massesἐσχίσθησαν, were split, 52  καὶ and τὰ theμνημεῖα memorial tombsἀνεῴχθησαν were openedκαὶ andπολλὰ manyσώματα bodiesτῶν of theκεκοιμημένων having fallen asleepἁγίων holy (ones)ἠγέρθησαν, were raised up, 53  καὶ and ἐξελθόντες [they] having gone forthἐκ out ofτῶν theμνημείων memorial tombsμετὰ afterτὴν theἔγερσιν being raised upαὐτοῦ of himεἰσῆλθον they enteredεἰς intoτὴν theἁγίαν holyπόλιν cityκαὶ andἐνεφανίσθησαν they were made apparentπολλοῖς. to many. 54  The δὲ butἑκατόνταρχος centurionκαὶ andοἱ the (ones)μετ’ withαὐτοῦ himτηροῦντες observingτὸν theἸησοῦν Jesusἰδόντες having seenτὸν theσεισμὸν [earth] quakeκαὶ andτὰ the (things)γινόμενα occurringἐφοβήθησαν they became afraidσφόδρα, very much,λέγοντες saying᾿Αληθῶς Trulyθεοῦ of Godυἱὸς Sonἦν wasοὗτος. this (one). 55  ῏Ησαν Were δὲ butἐκεῖ thereγυναῖκες womenπολλαὶ manyἀπὸ fromμακρόθεν far offθεωροῦσαι, viewing,αἵτινες whoἠκολούθησαν followedτῷ to theἸησοῦ Jesusἀπὸ fromτῆς theΓαλιλαίας Galileeδιακονοῦσαι servingαὐτῷ· to him; 56  ἐν in αἷς whomἦν wasΜαρία MarytheΜαγδαληνὴ Magdaleneκαὶ andΜαρία Marytheτοῦ of theἸακώβου Jamesκαὶ andἸωσὴφ Josephμήτηρ motherκαὶ andtheμήτηρ motherτῶν of theυἱῶν sonsΖεβεδαίου. of Zebedee. 57  Ὀψίας Of evening δὲ butγενομένης having come to beἦλθεν cameἄνθρωπος manπλούσιος richἀπὸ fromἉριμαθαίας, Arimathea,τοὔνομα the nameἸωσήφ, Joseph,ὃς whoκαὶ alsoαὐτὸς heἐμαθητεύθη was discipledτῷ to theἸησοῦ· Jesus; 58  οὗτος this (one) προσελθὼν having come towardτῷ to theΠειλάτῳ Pilateᾐτήσατο asked forτὸ theσῶμα bodyτοῦ of theἸησοῦ. YOU have known. 66  οἱ The (ones) δὲ butπορευθέντες having gone their wayἠσφαλίσαντο made secureτὸν theτάφον graveσφραγίσαντες having sealedτὸν theλίθον stoneμετὰ withτῆς theκουστωδίας. custody men.
