Caesar. 16  τότε Then οὖν thereforeπαρέδωκεν he gave besideαὐτὸν himαὐτοῖς to themἵνα in order thatσταυρωθῇ. he might be impaled. Jesus. 19  ἔγραψεν Wrote δὲ butκαὶ alsoτίτλον titletheΠειλᾶτος Pilateκαὶ andἔθηκεν he putἐπὶ uponτοῦ theσταυροῦ· stake;ἦν it wasδὲ butγεγραμμένον having been writtenἸησοῦς JesustheΝαζωραῖος NazarenetheΒασιλεὺς Kingτῶν of theἸουδαίων. Jews. 20  τοῦτον This οὖν thereforeτὸν theτίτλον titleπολλοὶ manyἀνέγνωσαν readτῶν of theἸουδαίων, Jews,ὅτι becauseἐγγὺς nearἦν wastheτόπος placeτῆς of theπόλεως cityὅπου whereἐσταυρώθη was impaledtheἸησοῦς· Jesus;καὶ andἦν it wasγεγραμμένον having been written᾿Εβραϊστί, in Hebrew,Ῥωμαϊστί, in Roman language,Ἑλληνιστί. in Greek. 21  ἔλεγον Were saying οὖν thereforeτῷ to theΠειλάτῳ Pilateοἱ theἀρχιερεῖς chief priestsτῶν of theἸουδαίων Jews,Μὴ Notγράφε be writingTheΒασιλεὺς Kingτῶν of theἸουδαίων, Jews,ἀλλ’ butὅτι thatἐκεῖνος that (one)εἶπεν saidΒασιλεὺς Kingτῶν of theἸουδαίων Jewsεἰμί. I have written. 23  Οἱ The οὖν thereforeστρατιῶται soldiersὅτε whenἐσταύρωσαν they impaledτὸν theἸησοῦν Jesusἔλαβον tookτὰ theἱμάτια outer garmentsαὐτοῦ of himκαὶ andἐποίησαν madeτέσσερα fourμέρη, parts,ἑκάστῳ to eachστρατιώτῃ soldierμέρος, part,καὶ andτὸν theχιτῶνα. inner garment.ἦν Wasδὲ buttheχιτὼν inner garmentἄραφος, seamless,ἐκ out ofτῶν the (ones)ἄνωθεν from aboveὑφαντὸς wovenδι’ throughoutὅλου· whole; 24  εἶπαν they said οὖν thereforeπρὸς towardἀλλήλους one anotherΜὴ Notσχίσωμεν we should splitαὐτόν, it,ἀλλὰ butλάχωμεν let us determine by lotπερὶ aboutαὐτοῦ itτίνος of whomἔσται· it will be;ἵνα in order thattheγραφὴ scriptureπληρωθῇ might be fulfilledΔιεμερίσαντο They distributedτὰ theἱμάτιά outer garmentsμου of meἑαυτοῖς to themselvesκαὶ andἐπὶ uponτὸν theἱματισμόν apparelμου of meἔβαλον they castκλῆρον. lot.Οἱ Theμὲν indeedοὖν thereforeστρατιῶται soldiersταῦτα these (things)ἐποίησαν. did. 25  ἱστήκεισαν Had stood δὲ butπαρὰ besideτῷ to theσταυρῷ stakeτοῦ of theἸησοῦ Jesustheμήτηρ motherαὐτοῦ of himκαὶ andtheἀδελφὴ sisterτῆς of theμητρὸς motherαὐτοῦ, of him,Μαρία Marythe (one)τοῦ of theΚλωπᾶ Clopasκαὶ andΜαρία MarytheΜαγδαληνή. I am thirsting. 29  σκεῦος Vessel ἔκειτο was lyingὄξους of vinegarμεστόν· full;σπόγγον spongeοὖν thereforeμεστὸν fullτοῦ of theὄξους vinegarὑσσώπῳ to hyssopπεριθέντες having put aboutπροσήνεγκαν they brought towardαὐτοῦ of himτῷ to theστόματι. mouth. 30  ὅτε When οὖν thereforeἔλαβεν receivedτὸ theὄξος vinegartheἸησοῦς Jesusεἶπεν saidΤετέλεσται, It has been finished,καὶ andκλίνας having inclinedτὴν theκεφαλὴν headπαρέδωκεν he gave besideτὸ theπνεῦμα. spirit. 31  Οἱ The οὖν thereforeἸουδαῖοι, Jews,ἐπεὶ sinceπαρασκευὴ Preparationἦν, it was,ἵνα in order thatμὴ notμείνῃ might remainἐπὶ uponτοῦ theσταυροῦ stakeτὰ theσώματα bodiesἐν inτῷ theσαββάτῳ, sabbath,ἦν it wasγὰρ forμεγάλη greattheἡμέρα dayἐκείνου of thatτοῦ of theσαββάτου, sabbath,ἠρώτησαν they requestedτὸν theΠειλᾶτον Pilateἵνα in order thatκατεαγῶσιν might be brokenαὐτῶν of themτὰ theσκέλη legsκαὶ andἀρθῶσιν. they might be lifted off. 32  ἦλθον Came οὖν thereforeοἱ theστρατιῶται, soldiers,καὶ andτοῦ of theμὲν indeedπρώτου first (one)κατέαξαν they brokeτὰ theσκέλη legsκαὶ andτοῦ of theἄλλου other (one)τοῦ of the (one)συνσταυρωθέντος having been impaled togetherαὐτῷ· to him; 33  ἐπὶ upon δὲ butτὸν theἸησοῦν Jesusἐλθόντες, having come,ὡς asεἶδον they sawἤδη alreadyαὐτὸν himτεθνηκότα, having died,οὐ notκατέαξαν they brokeαὐτοῦ of himτὰ theσκέλη, legs, 34  ἀλλ’ but εἷς oneτῶν of theστρατιωτῶν soldiersλόγχῃ to spearαὐτοῦ of himτὴν theπλευρὰν sideἔνυξεν, punctured,καὶ andἐξῆλθεν came outεὐθὺς at onceαἷμα bloodκαὶ andὕδωρ. water. 35  καὶ And the (one)ἑωρακὼς having seenμεμαρτύρηκεν, has borne witness,καὶ andἀληθινὴ trueαὐτοῦ of himἐστὶν istheμαρτυρία, witness,καὶ andἐκεῖνος that (one)οἶδεν has knownὅτι thatἀληθῆ true (things)λέγει, he is saying,ἵνα in order thatκαὶ alsoὑμεῖς YOUπιστεύητε. may be believing. 36  ἐγένετο Occurred γὰρ forταῦτα these (things)ἵνα in order thattheγραφὴ scriptureπληρωθῇ might be fulfilledὈστοῦν Boneοὐ notσυντριβήσεται will be crushedαὐτοῦ. of him. 37  καὶ And πάλιν againἑτέρα differentγραφὴ scriptureλέγει is sayingὌψονται They will seeεἰς intoὃν whomἐξεκέντησαν. they pierced. 38  Μετὰ After δὲ butταῦτα these (things)ἠρώτησεν requestedτὸν theΠειλᾶτον PilateἸωσὴφ Josephἀπὸ fromἉριμαθαίας, Arimathea,ὢν beingμαθητὴς discipleτοῦ of theἸησοῦ Jesusκεκρυμμένος having been hiddenδὲ butδιὰ throughτὸν theφόβον fearτῶν of theἸουδαίων, Jews,ἵνα in order thatἄρῃ he might lift offτὸ theσῶμα bodyτοῦ of theἸησοῦ· Jesus;καὶ andἐπέτρεψεν permittedtheΠειλᾶτος.
