MARCH 7, 2016
On March 9, 2016, the Baku Court of Appeal will hear the complaints of Irina Zakharchenko and Valida Jabrayilova against their unlawful convictions for distributing religious literature. The women seek acquittal, payment of all legal costs, and compensation for the violation of their rights while imprisoned for nearly one year.
Before the trial, the UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention issued a binding Opinion that determined that Azerbaijan’s authorities had violated the rights of Ms. Zakharchenko and Ms. Jabrayilova and that they deserved compensation as victims. In reaching its January 28, 2016, judgment, the trial court ignored that decision and found the women guilty.
