Matthew 2:1-23

2  Τοῦ Of theδὲ butἸησοῦ Jesusγεννηθέντος having been generatedἐν inΒηθλεὲμ Bethlehemτῆς of theἸουδαίας Judeaἐν inἡμέραις daysἩρῴδου of Herodτοῦ theβασιλέως, king,ἰδοὺ look!μάγοι magiἀπὸ fromἀνατολῶν eastern partsπαρεγένοντο came to be alongsideεἰς intoἸεροσόλυμα Jerusalem 2  λέγοντες sayingΠοῦ Whereἐστὶν isὁ the (one)τεχθεὶς bornβασιλεὺς kingτῶν of theἸουδαίων; Jews?εἴδομεν We sawγὰρ forαὐτοῦ of himτὸν theἀστέρα starἐν inτῇ theἀνατολῇ eastκαὶ andἤλθομεν we cameπροσκυνῆσαι to do obeisanceαὐτῷ. to him. 3  ᾿Ακούσας Having heardδὲ butὁ theβασιλεὺς KingἩρῴδης Herodἐταράχθη was agitatedκαὶ andπᾶσα allἸεροσόλυμα Jerusalemμετ’ withαὐτοῦ, him, 4  καὶ andσυναγαγὼν having led togetherπάντας allτοὺς theἀρχιερεῖς chief priestsκαὶ andγραμματεῖς scribesτοῦ of theλαοῦ peopleἐπυνθάνετο he was inquiringπαρ’ besideαὐτῶν themποῦ whereὁ theχριστὸς Christγεννᾶται. is generated. 5  οἱ The (ones)δὲ butεἶπαν saidαὐτῷ to him᾿Εν InΒηθλεὲμ Bethlehemτῆς of theἸουδαίας· Judea;οὕτως thusγὰρ forγέγραπται it has been writtenδιὰ throughτοῦ theπροφήτου prophet 6  Καὶ Andσύ, you,Βηθλεὲμ Bethlehemγῆ landἸούδα, of Judah,οὐδαμῶς by no meansἐλαχίστη leastεἶ areἐν inτοῖς theἡγεμόσιν governorsἸούδα· of Judah;ἐκ out ofσοῦ youγὰρ forἐξελεύσεται will come forthἡγούμενος, governing one,ὅστις whoποιμανεῖ will shepherdτὸν theλαόν peopleμου of meτὸν theἸσραήλ. Israel. 7  Τότε ThenἩρῴδης Herodλάθρᾳ secretlyκαλέσας having calledτοὺς theμάγους magiἠκρίβωσεν carefully ascertainedπαρ’ besideαὐτῶν themτὸν theχρόνον timeτοῦ of theφαινομένου appearingἀστέρος, star, 8  καὶ andπέμψας having sentαὐτοὺς themεἰς intoΒηθλεὲμ Bethlehemεἶπεν he saidΠορευθέντες Having gone on wayἐξετάσατε search YOUἀκριβῶς carefullyπερὶ aboutτοῦ theπαιδίου· young child;ἐπὰν wheneverδὲ butεὕρητε YOU might findἀπαγγείλατέ report backμοι, to me,ὅπως so thatκἀγὼ also Iἐλθὼν having comeπροσκυνήσω might do obeisanceαὐτῷ. to it. 9  οἱ The (ones)δὲ butἀκούσαντες having heardτοῦ of theβασιλέως kingἐπορεύθησαν, went their way,καὶ andἰδοὺ look!ὁ theἀστὴρ starὃν whichεἶδον they sawἐν inτῇ theἀνατολῇ eastπροῆγεν went ahead ofαὐτούς, them,ἕως untilἐλθὼν having comeἐστάθη it stoodἐπάνω aboveοὗ whereἦν wasτὸ theπαιδίον. young child. 10  ἰδόντες Having seenδὲ butτὸν theἀστέρα starἐχάρησαν they rejoicedχαρὰν joyμεγάλην greatσφόδρα. very much. 11  καὶ Andἐλθόντες having comeεἰς intoτὴν theοἰκίαν houseεἶδον they sawτὸ theπαιδίον young childμετὰ withΜαρίας Maryτῆς theμητρὸς motherαὐτοῦ, of it,καὶ andπεσόντες having fallen downπροσεκύνησαν they did obeisanceαὐτῷ, to it,καὶ andἀνοίξαντες having openedτοὺς theθησαυροὺς treasuresαὐτῶν of themπροσήνεγκαν they presentedαὐτῷ to itδῶρα, gifts,χρυσὸν goldκαὶ andλίβανον frankincenseκαὶ andσμύρναν. myrrh. 12  καὶ Andχρηματισθέντες having been given divine warningκατ’ according toὄναρ dreamμὴ notἀνακάμψαι to returnπρὸς towardἩρῴδην Herodδι’ throughἄλλης anotherὁδοῦ wayἀνεχώρησαν they withdrewεἰς intoτὴν theχώραν countryαὐτῶν. of them. 13  ᾿Αναχωρησάντων Having withdrawnδὲ butαὐτῶν of themἰδοὺ look!ἄγγελος angelΚυρίου of Lordφαίνεται appearsκατ’ according toὄναρ dreamτῷ to theἸωσὴφ Josephλέγων saying᾿Εγερθεὶς Having got upπαράλαβε take alongτὸ theπαιδίον young childκαὶ andτὴν theμητέρα motherαὐτοῦ of itκαὶ andφεῦγε be fleeingεἰς intoΑἴγυπτον, Egypt,καὶ andἴσθι beἐκεῖ thereἕως untilἂν likelyεἴπω I might speakσοι· to you;μέλλει is aboutγὰρ forἩρῴδης Herodζητεῖν to seekτὸ theπαιδίον young childτοῦ of theἀπολέσαι to destroyαὐτό. it. 14  ὁ The (one)δὲ butἐγερθεὶς having got upπαρέλαβε took alongτὸ theπαιδίον young childκαὶ andτὴν theμητέρα motherαὐτοῦ of itνυκτὸς of nightκαὶ andἀνεχώρησεν withdrewεἰς intoΑἴγυπτον, Egypt, 15  καὶ andἦν wasἐκεῖ thereἕως untilτῆς theτελευτῆς deceaseἩρῴδου· of Herod;ἵνα in order thatπληρωθῇ might be fulfilledτὸ the (thing)ῥηθὲν spokenὑπὸ byΚυρίου Lordδιὰ throughτοῦ theπροφήτου prophetλέγοντος saying᾿Εξ Out ofΑἰγύπτου Egyptἐκάλεσα I calledτὸν theυἱόν sonμου. of me. 16  Τότε ThenἩρῴδης Herodἰδὼν having seenὅτι thatἐνεπαίχθη he was outwittedὑπὸ byτῶν theμάγων magiἐθυμώθη was enragedλίαν, greatly,καὶ andἀποστείλας having sent offἀνεῖλεν he took upπάντας allτοὺς theπαῖδας boysτοὺς the (ones)ἐν inΒηθλεὲμ Bethlehemκαὶ andἐν inπᾶσι allτοῖς theὁρίοις districtsαὐτῆς of itἀπὸ fromδιετοῦς two yearsκαὶ andκατωτέρω, down more,κατὰ according toτὸν theχρόνον timeὃν whichἠκρίβωσεν he carefully ascertainedπαρὰ besideτῶν of theμάγων. magi. 17  Τότε Thenἐπληρώθη was fulfilledτὸ the (thing)ῥηθὲν spokenδιὰ throughἸερεμίου Jeremiahτοῦ theπροφήτου prophetλέγοντος saying 18  Φωνὴ Voiceἐν inῬαμὰ Ramahἠκούσθη, was heard,κλαυθμὸς weepingκαὶ andὀδυρμὸς wailingπολύς· much;Ῥαχὴλ Rachelκλαίουσα weeping forτὰ theτέκνα childrenαὐτῆς, of her,καὶ andοὐκ notἤθελεν was willingπαρακληθῆναι to be comfortedὅτι becauseοὐκ notεἰσίν. they are. 19  Τελευτήσαντος Having deceasedδὲ butτοῦ of theἩρῴδου Herodἰδοὺ look!ἄγγελος angelΚυρίου of Lordφαίνεται appearsκατ’ according toὄναρ dreamτῷ to theἸωσὴφ Josephἐν inΑἰγύπτῳ Egypt 20  λέγων saying᾿Εγερθεὶς Having got upπαράλαβε take alongτὸ theπαιδίον young childκαὶ andτὴν theμητέρα motherαὐτοῦ of itκαὶ andπορεύου be on your wayεἰς intoγῆν earthἸσραήλ, of Israel,τεθνήκασιν have diedγὰρ forοἱ the (ones)ζητοῦντες seekingτὴν theψυχὴν soulτοῦ of theπαιδίου. young child. 21  ὁ The (one)δὲ butἐγερθεὶς having got upπαρέλαβε took alongτὸ theπαιδίον young childκαὶ andτὴν theμητέρα motherαὐτοῦ of itκαὶ andεἰσῆλθεν enteredεἰς intoγῆν earthἸσραήλ. of Israel. 22  ἀκούσας Having heardδὲ butὅτι that᾿Αρχέλαος Archelausβασιλεύει is reigningτῆς of theἸουδαίας Judeaἀντὶ instead ofτοῦ theπατρὸς fatherαὐτοῦ of himἩρῴδου Herodἐφοβήθη he became afraidἐκεῖ thereἀπελθεῖν· to depart;χρηματισθεὶς having been given divine warningδὲ butκατ’ according toὄναρ dreamἀνεχώρησεν he withdrewεἰς intoτὰ theμέρη partsτῆς of theΓαλιλαίας, Galilee, 23  καὶ andἐλθὼν having comeκατῴκησεν he settledεἰς intoπόλιν cityλεγομένην being saidΝαζαρέτ, Nazareth,ὅπως so thatπληρωθῇ might be fulfilledτὸ the (thing)ῥηθὲν spokenδιὰ throughτῶν theπροφητῶν prophetsὅτι thatΝαζωραῖος Nazareneκληθήσεται. he will be called.
