Matthew 14:1-36

14  ᾿Εν Inἐκείνῳ thatτῷ theκαιρῷ appointed timeἤκουσεν heardἩρῴδης Herodtheτετραάρχης tetrarchτὴν theἀκοὴν hearingἸησοῦ, of Jesus, 2  καὶ andεἶπεν saidτοῖς to theπαισὶν boysαὐτοῦ of himΟὗτός This (one)ἐστιν isἸωάνης Johntheβαπτιστής· Baptist;αὐτὸς heἠγέρθη was raised upἀπὸ fromτῶν theνεκρῶν, dead (ones),καὶ andδιὰ throughτοῦτο thisαἱ theδυνάμεις powerful worksἐνεργοῦσιν are operatingἐν inαὐτῷ. him. 3  Theγὰρ forἩρῴδης Herodκρατήσας having laid hold ofτὸν theἸωάνην Johnἔδησεν boundκαὶ andἐν inφυλακῇ prisonἀπέθετο he put offδιὰ throughἩρῳδιάδα Herodiasτὴν theγυναῖκα womanΦιλίππου of Philipτοῦ theἀδελφοῦ brotherαὐτοῦ, of him, 4  ἔλεγεν was sayingγὰρ fortheἸωάνης Johnαὐτῷ to himΟὐκ Notἔξεστίν it is lawfulσοι to youἔχειν to be havingαὐτήν· her; 5  καὶ andθέλων being willingαὐτὸν himἀποκτεῖναι to killἐφοβήθη he fearedτὸν theὄχλον, crowd,ὅτι becauseὡς asπροφήτην prophetαὐτὸν himεἶχον. they were having. 6  γενεσίοις To birthday celebrationsδὲ butγενομένοις having come to beτοῦ of theἩρῴδου Herodὠρχήσατο dancedtheθυγάτηρ daughterτῆς of theἩρῳδιάδος Herodiasἐν inτῷ theμέσῳ midstκαὶ andἤρεσεν she gave pleasureτῷ to theἩρῴδῃ, Herod, 7  ὅθεν from which [fact]μετὰ withὅρκου oathὡμολόγησεν he confessedαὐτῇ to herδοῦναι to givewhichἐὰν if everαἰτήσηται. she might ask. 8  The (one)δὲ butπροβιβασθεῖσα having been coachedὑπὸ byτῆς theμητρὸς motherαὐτῆς of herΔός Giveμοι, to me,φησίν, she is saying,ὧδε hereἐπὶ uponπίνακι plateτὴν theκεφαλὴν headἸωάνου of Johnτοῦ theβαπτιστοῦ. Baptist. 9  καὶ Andλυπηθεὶς having been grievedtheβασιλεὺς kingδιὰ throughτοὺς theὅρκους oathsκαὶ andτοὺς the (ones)συνανακειμένους reclining withἐκέλευσεν he commandedδοθῆναι, to be given, 10  καὶ andπέμψας having sentἀπεκεφάλισεν he beheadedἸωάνην Johnἐν inτῇ theφυλακῇ· prison; 11  καὶ andἠνέχθη was broughttheκεφαλὴ headαὐτοῦ of himἐπὶ uponπίνακι platterκαὶ andἐδόθη was givenτῷ to theκορασίῳ, maiden,καὶ andἤνεγκεν she broughtτῇ to theμητρὶ motherαὐτῆς. of her. 12  Καὶ Andπροσελθόντες having come towardοἱ theμαθηταὶ disciplesαὐτοῦ of himἦραν lifted upτὸ theπτῶμα corpseκαὶ andἔθαψαν buriedαὐτόν, him,καὶ andἐλθόντες having comeἀπήγγειλαν they reported backτῷ to theἸησοῦ. Jesus. 13  ᾿Ακούσας Having heardδὲ buttheἸησοῦς Jesusἀνεχώρησεν withdrewἐκεῖθεν from thereἐν inπλοίῳ boatεἰς intoἔρημον lonelyτόπον placeκατ’ according toἰδίαν· private [spot];καὶ andἀκούσαντες having heardοἱ theὄχλοι crowdsἠκολούθησαν followedαὐτῷ to himπεζῇ afootἀπὸ fromτῶν theπόλεων. cities. 14  Καὶ Andἐξελθὼν having gone outεἶδεν he sawπολὺν muchὄχλον, crowd,καὶ andἐσπλαγχνίσθη he felt pityἐπ’ uponαὐτοῖς themκαὶ andἐθεράπευσεν he curedτοὺς theἀρρώστους sick onesαὐτῶν. of them. 15  Ὀψίας Of eveningδὲ butγενομένης having occurredπροσῆλθαν came towardαὐτῷ to himοἱ theμαθηταὶ disciplesλέγοντες sayingἜρημός Lonelyἐστιν istheτόπος placeκαὶ andtheὥρα hourἤδη alreadyπαρῆλθεν· passed by;ἀπόλυσον let loose offτοὺς theὄχλους, crowds,ἵνα in order thatἀπελθόντες having gone offεἰς intoτὰς theκώμας villagesἀγοράσωσιν they might buyἑαυτοῖς to themselvesβρώματα. eatables. 16  Theδὲ butἸησοῦς Jesusεἶπεν saidαὐτοῖς to themΟὐ Notχρείαν needἔχουσιν they are havingἀπελθεῖν· to go off;δότε giveαὐτοῖς to themὑμεῖς youφαγεῖν. to eat. 17  οἱ The (ones)δὲ butλέγουσιν are sayingαὐτῷ to himΟὐκ Notἔχομεν we are havingὧδε hereεἰ ifμὴ notπέντε fiveἄρτους loavesκαὶ andδύο twoἰχθύας. fishes. 18  The (one)δὲ butεἶπεν saidΦέρετέ Be bearingμοι to meὧδε hereαὐτούς. them. 19  καὶ Andκελεύσας having commandedτοὺς theὄχλους crowdsἀνακλιθῆναι to reclineἐπὶ uponτοῦ theχόρτου, grass,λαβὼν having takenτοὺς theπέντε fiveἄρτους loavesκαὶ andτοὺς theδύο twoἰχθύας, fishes,ἀναβλέψας having looked upεἰς intoτὸν theοὐρανὸν heavenεὐλόγησεν he blessedκαὶ andκλάσας having brokenἔδωκεν he gaveτοῖς to theμαθηταῖς disciplesτοὺς theἄρτους loavesοἱ theδὲ butμαθηταὶ disciplesτοῖς to theὄχλοις. crowds. 20  καὶ Andἔφαγον they ateπάντες all (they)καὶ andἐχορτάσθησαν, were satisfied,καὶ andἦραν they lifted upτὸ theπερισσεῦον aboundingτῶν of theκλασμάτων fragmentsδώδεκα twelveκοφίνους basketsπλήρεις. full. 21  οἱ The (ones)δὲ butἐσθίοντες eatingἦσαν wereἄνδρες male personsὡσεὶ as ifπεντακισχίλιοι five thousandχωρὶς apart fromγυναικῶν womenκαὶ andπαιδίων. little boys. 22  Καὶ Andεὐθέως immediatelyἠνάγκασεν he compelledτοὺς theμαθητὰς disciplesἐμβῆναι to step inεἰς intoπλοῖον boatκαὶ andπροάγειν to go ahead ofαὐτὸν himεἰς intoτὸ theπέραν, other side,ἕως untilοὗ whereἀπολύσῃ he might let loose offτοὺς theὄχλους. crowds. 23  καὶ Andἀπολύσας having let loose offτοὺς theὄχλους crowdsἀνέβη he went upεἰς intoτὸ theὄρος mountainκατ’ according toἰδίαν private [spot]προσεύξασθαι. to pray.ὀψίας Of eveningδὲ butγενομένης having occurredμόνος aloneἦν he wasἐκεῖ. there. 24  Τὸ Theδὲ butπλοῖον boatἤδη alreadyσταδίους stadiaπολλοὺς manyἀπὸ fromτῆς theγῆς earthἀπεῖχεν, was having off,βασανιζόμενον being tormentedὑπὸ byτῶν theκυμάτων, waves,ἦν wasγὰρ forἐναντίος adversetheἄνεμος. wind. 25  Τετάρτῃ To fourthδὲ butφυλακῇ watch periodτῆς of theνυκτὸς nightἦλθεν cameπρὸς towardαὐτοὺς themπεριπατῶν walking aboutἐπὶ uponτὴν theθάλασσαν. sea. 26  οἱ Theδὲ butμαθηταὶ disciplesἰδόντες having seenαὐτὸν himἐπὶ uponτῆς theθαλάσσης seaπεριπατοῦντα walking aboutἐταράχθησαν were troubledλέγοντες sayingὅτι thatΦάντασμά Apparitionἐστιν, it is,καὶ andἀπὸ fromτοῦ theφόβου fearἔκραξαν. they cried out. 27  εὐθὺς At onceδὲ butἐλάλησεν spoketheἸησοῦς Jesusαὐτοῖς to themλέγων sayingΘαρσεῖτε, Be taking courage,ἐγώ Iεἰμι· am;μὴ notφοβεῖσθε. be YOU fearing. 28  ἀποκριθεὶς Having answeredδὲ buttheΠέτρος Peterεἶπεν saidαὐτῷ to himΚύριε, Lord,εἰ ifσὺ youεἶ, are,κέλευσόν commandμε meἐλθεῖν to comeπρὸς towardσὲ youἐπὶ uponτὰ theὕδατα· waters; 29  the (one)δὲ butεἶπεν said᾿Ελθέ. Come.καὶ Andκαταβὰς having stepped downἀπὸ fromτοῦ theπλοίου boatΠέτρος Peterπεριεπάτησεν walked aboutἐπὶ uponτὰ theὕδατα watersκαὶ andἦλθεν cameπρὸς towardτὸν theἸησοῦν. Jesus. 30  βλέπων Looking atδὲ butτὸν theἄνεμον windἐφοβήθη, he became fearful,καὶ andἀρξάμενος having startedκαταποντίζεσθαι to sinkἔκραξεν he cried outλέγων sayingΚύριε, Lord,σῶσόν saveμε. me. 31  εὐθέως Immediatelyδὲ buttheἸησοῦς Jesusἐκτείνας having stretched outτὴν theχεῖρα handἐπελάβετο caught holdαὐτοῦ of himκαὶ andλέγει is sayingαὐτῷ to himὈλιγόπιστε, One with little faith,εἰς intoτί whatἐδίστασας; doubted you? 32  καὶ Andἀναβάντων having stepped upαὐτῶν of themεἰς intoτὸ theπλοῖον boatἐκόπασεν abatedtheἄνεμος. wind. 33  οἱ The (ones)δὲ butἐν inτῷ theπλοίῳ boatπροσεκύνησαν did obeisanceαὐτῷ to himλέγοντες saying᾿Αληθῶς Truthfullyθεοῦ of Godυἱὸς Sonεἶ. you are. 34  Καὶ Andδιαπεράσαντες having got throughἦλθαν they cameἐπὶ uponτὴν theγῆν earthεἰς intoΓεννησαρέτ. Gennesaret. 35  καὶ Andἐπιγνόντες having recognizedαὐτὸν himοἱ theἄνδρες male personsτοῦ of theτόπου placeἐκείνου thatἀπέστειλαν sent offεἰς intoὅλην wholeτὴν theπερίχωρον surrounding countryἐκείνην, that,καὶ andπροσήνεγκαν brought towardαὐτῷ himπάντας allτοὺς the (ones)κακῶς badlyἔχοντας, having, 36  καὶ andπαρεκάλουν they were entreatingαὐτὸν himἵνα in order thatμόνον onlyἅψωνται they might touchτοῦ of theκρασπέδου fringeτοῦ of theἱματίου outer garmentαὐτοῦ· of him;καὶ andὅσοι as many asἥψαντο touchedδιεσώθησαν. were saved through.
