23  ἀτενίσας Having looked intentlyδὲ butΠαῦλος Paulτῷ to theσυνεδρίῳ Sanhedrinεἶπεν saidἌνδρες Male personsἀδελφοί, brothers,ἐγὼ Iπάσῃ to allσυνειδήσει conscienceἀγαθῇ goodπεπολίτευμαι I have behaved as citizenτῷ to theθεῷ Godἄχρι untilταύτης thisτῆς theἡμέρας. day. 2  Theδὲ butἀρχιερεὺς chief priestἉνανίας Ananiasἐπέταξεν orderedτοῖς to the (ones)παρεστῶσιν having stood besideαὐτῷ himτύπτειν to be strikingαὐτοῦ of himτὸ theστόμα. mouth. 3  τότε ThentheΠαῦλος Paulπρὸς towardαὐτὸν himεἶπεν saidΤύπτειν To be strikingσε youμέλλει is abouttheθεός, God,τοῖχε wallκεκονιαμένε· having been whitened;καὶ andσὺ youκάθῃ are sittingκρίνων judgingμε meκατὰ according toτὸν theνόμον, Law,καὶ andπαρανομῶν acting contrary to Lawκελεύεις you are commandingμε meτύπτεσθαι; to be being struck? 4  οἱ The (ones)δὲ butπαρεστῶτες having stood besideεἶπαν saidΤὸν Theἀρχιερέα chief priestτοῦ of theθεοῦ Godλοιδορεῖς; you are reviling? 5  ἔφη Saidτε andtheΠαῦλος PaulΟὐκ Notᾔδειν, I had known,ἀδελφοί, brothers,ὅτι thatἐστὶν he isἀρχιερεύς· chief priest;γέγραπται it has been writtenγὰρ forὅτι thatἄρχοντα rulerτοῦ of theλαοῦ peopleσου of youοὐκ notἐρεῖς you will sayκακῶς. badly. 6  Γνοὺς Having knownδὲ buttheΠαῦλος Paulὅτι thatτὸ theἓν oneμέρος partἐστὶν isΣαδδουκαίων of Sadduceesτὸ theδὲ butἕτερον differentΦαρισαίων of Phariseesἔκραζεν he was crying outἐν inτῷ theσυνεδρίῳ SanhedrinἌνδρες Male personsἀδελφοί, brothers,ἐγὼ IΦαρισαῖός Phariseeεἰμι, I am,υἱὸς sonΦαρισαίων· of Pharisees;περὶ aboutἐλπίδος hopeκαὶ andἀναστάσεως resurrectionνεκρῶν of dead (ones)κρίνομαι. I am being judged. 7  τοῦτο Thisδὲ butαὐτοῦ of himλαλοῦντος speakingἐγένετο there occurredστάσις standingτῶν of theΦαρισαίων Phariseesκαὶ andΣαδδουκαίων, Sadducees,καὶ andἐσχίσθη was splitτὸ theπλῆθος. multitude. 8  Σαδδουκαῖοι Sadduceesγὰρ forλέγουσιν are sayingμὴ notεἶναι to beἀνάστασιν resurrectionμήτε norἄγγελον angelμήτε norπνεῦμα, spirit,Φαρισαῖοι Phariseesδὲ butὁμολογοῦσιν are confessingτὰ theἀμφότερα. both (things). 9  ἐγένετο Occurredδὲ butκραυγὴ outcryμεγάλη, great,καὶ andἀναστάντες having stood upτινὲς someτῶν of theγραμματέων scribesτοῦ of theμέρους partτῶν of theΦαρισαίων Phariseesδιεμάχοντο were fighting throughλέγοντες sayingΟὐδὲν Nothingκακὸν badεὑρίσκομεν we are findingἐν inτῷ theἀνθρώπῳ manτούτῳ· this;εἰ ifδὲ butπνεῦμα spiritἐλάλησεν spokeαὐτῷ to himorἄγγελος—. angel—. 10  Πολλῆς Of muchδὲ butγινομένης occurringστάσεως of standingφοβηθεὶς having fearedtheχιλίαρχος chiliarchμὴ notδιασπασθῇ should be drawn in twotheΠαῦλος Paulὑπ’ byαὐτῶν themἐκέλευσεν he commandedτὸ theστράτευμα soldier bandκαταβὰν having come downἁρπάσαι to snatchαὐτὸν himἐκ out ofμέσου middleαὐτῶν, of them,ἄγειν to be leadingεἰς intoτὴν theπαρεμβολήν. encampment. 11  Τῇ To theδὲ butἐπιούσῃ succeedingνυκτὶ nightἐπιστὰς having stood uponαὐτῷ himtheκύριος Lordεἶπεν saidΘάρσει, Take courage,ὡς asγὰρ forδιεμαρτύρω you gave thorough witness toτὰ the (things)περὶ aboutἐμοῦ meεἰς intoἸερουσαλὴμ Jerusalemοὕτω thusσε youδεῖ it is necessaryκαὶ alsoεἰς intoῬώμην Romeμαρτυρῆσαι. to bear witness. 12  Γενομένης Having occurredδὲ butἡμέρας of dayποιήσαντες having madeσυστροφὴν turning togetherοἱ theἸουδαῖοι Jewsἀνεθεμάτισαν bound under curseἑαυτοὺς themselvesλέγοντες sayingμήτε neitherφαγεῖν to eatμήτε norπεῖν to drinkἕως untilοὗ whichἀποκτείνωσιν they should killτὸν theΠαῦλον. Paul. 13  ἦσαν Wereδὲ butπλείους more (ones)τεσσεράκοντα fortyοἱ the (ones)ταύτην thisτὴν theσυνωμοσίαν swearing togetherποιησάμενοι· having made; 14  οἵτινες whoπροσελθόντες having come towardτοῖς theἀρχιερεῦσιν chief priestsκαὶ andτοῖς to theπρεσβυτέροις older menεἶπαν they said᾿Αναθέματι To curseἀνεθεματίσαμεν we cursedἑαυτοὺς selvesμηδενὸς of nothingγεύσασθαι to tasteἕως untilοὗ whichἀποκτείνωμεν we may killτὸν theΠαῦλον. Paul. 15  νῦν Nowοὖν thereforeὑμεῖς YOUἐμφανίσατε make YOU apparentτῷ to theχιλιάρχῳ chiliarchσὺν together withτῷ theσυνεδρίῳ Sanhedrinὅπως so thatκαταγάγῃ he should lead downαὐτὸν himεἰς intoὑμᾶς YOUὡς asμέλλοντας being aboutδιαγινώσκειν to be knowing thoroughlyἀκριβέστερον more accuratelyτὰ the (things)περὶ aboutαὐτοῦ· him;ἡμεῖς weδὲ butπρὸ beforeτοῦ of theἐγγίσαι to have come nearαὐτὸν himἕτοιμοί readyἐσμεν we areτοῦ of theἀνελεῖν to take upαὐτόν. him. 16  ᾿Ακούσας Having heardδὲ buttheυἱὸς sonτῆς of theἀδελφῆς sisterΠαύλου of Paulτὴν theἐνέδραν sitting inπαραγενόμενος having come to be alongsideκαὶ andεἰσελθὼν having enteredεἰς intoτὴν theπαρεμβολὴν encampmentἀπήγγειλεν he reported backτῷ to theΠαύλῳ. Paul. 17  προσκαλεσάμενος Having called toward selfδὲ buttheΠαῦλος Paulἕνα oneτῶν of theἑκατονταρχῶν centurionsἔφη he saidΤὸν Theνεανίαν young manτοῦτον thisἄπαγε be leading offπρὸς towardτὸν theχιλίαρχον, chiliarch,ἔχει he is havingγὰρ forἀπαγγεῖλαί to report backτι somethingαὐτῷ. to him. 18  The (one)μὲν indeedοὖν thereforeπαραλαβὼν having taken alongαὐτὸν himἤγαγεν he ledπρὸς towardτὸν theχιλίαρχον chiliarchκαί andφησιν he is sayingTheδέσμιος bound oneΠαῦλος Paulπροσκαλεσάμενός having called toward selfμε meἠρώτησεν he requestedτοῦτον thisτὸν theνεανίαν young manἀγαγεῖν to leadπρὸς towardσέ, you,ἔχοντά havingτι somethingλαλῆσαί to speakσοι. to you. 19  ἐπιλαβόμενος Having taken uponδὲ butτῆς of theχειρὸς handαὐτοῦ of himtheχιλίαρχος chiliarchκαὶ andἀναχωρήσας having withdrawnκατ’ according toἰδίαν own [place]ἐπυνθάνετο he was inquiringΤί Whatἐστιν is itwhichἔχεις you are havingἀπαγγεῖλαί to report backμοι; to me? 20  εἶπεν He saidδὲ butὅτι thatΟἱ TheἸουδαῖοι Jewsσυνέθεντο put selves togetherτοῦ of theἐρωτῆσαί to requestσε youὅπως so thatαὔριον tomorrowτὸν theΠαῦλον Paulκαταγάγῃς you should lead downεἰς intoτὸ theσυνέδριον Sanhedrinὡς asμέλλων being aboutτι somethingἀκριβέστερον more accuratelyπυνθάνεσθαι to be inquiringπερὶ aboutαὐτοῦ· him; 21  σὺ youοὖν thereforeμὴ notπεισθῇς you should be persuadedαὐτοῖς, to them,ἐνεδρεύουσιν they are sitting in (wait) forγὰρ forαὐτὸν himἐξ out ofαὐτῶν themἄνδρες male personsπλείους more (ones)τεσσεράκοντα, forty,οἵτινες whoἀνεθεμάτισαν bound under curseἑαυτοὺς themselvesμήτε neitherφαγεῖν to eatμήτε norπεῖν to drinkἕως untilοὗ whichἀνέλωσιν they should take upαὐτόν, him,καὶ andνῦν nowεἰσὶν they areἕτοιμοι readyπροσδεχόμενοι waiting forτὴν theἀπὸ fromσοῦ youἐπαγγελίαν. promise. 22  Theμὲν indeedοὖν thereforeχιλίαρχος chiliarchἀπέλυσε releasedτὸν theνεανίσκον young manπαραγγείλας having chargedμηδενὶ to no oneἐκλαλῆσαι to speak outὅτι thatταῦτα these (things)ἐνεφάνισας you made apparentπρὸς towardἐμέ. me. 23  Καὶ Andπροσκαλεσάμενός having called toward selfτινας someδύο twoτῶν of theἑκατονταρχῶν centurionsεἶπεν he saidἙτοιμάσατε Make YOU readyστρατιώτας soldiersδιακοσίους two hundredὅπως so thatπορευθῶσιν they should goἕως untilΚαισαρίας, Caesarea,καὶ alsoἱππεῖς horsemenἑβδομήκοντα seventyκαὶ andδεξιολάβους spearmenδιακοσίους, two hundred,ἀπὸ fromτρίτης thirdὥρας hourτῆς of theνυκτός, night, 24  κτήνη acquired animalsτε andπαραστῆσαι to make stand alongsideἵνα in order thatἐπιβιβάσαντες having mountedτὸν theΠαῦλον Paulδιασώσωσι they might save clear throughπρὸς towardΦήλικα Felixτὸν theἡγεμόνα, governor, 25  γράψας having writtenἐπιστολὴν letterἔχουσαν havingτὸν theτύπον typeτοῦτον· this; 26  Κλαύδιος ClaudiusΛυσίας Lysiasτῷ to theκρατίστῳ most mightyἡγεμόνι governorΦήλικι Felixχαίρειν. To be rejoicing. 27  Τὸν Theἄνδρα male personτοῦτον thisσυλλημφθέντα having been seizedὑπὸ byτῶν theἸουδαίων Jewsκαὶ andμέλλοντα being aboutἀναιρεῖσθαι to be taken upὑπ’ byαὐτῶν themἐπιστὰς having stood uponσὺν together withτῷ theστρατεύματι soldier bandἐξειλάμην, I took out,μαθὼν having learnedὅτι thatῬωμαῖός Romanἐστιν, he is, 28  βουλόμενός wishingτε andἐπιγνῶναι to know fullyτὴν theαἰτίαν causeδι’ throughἣν whichἐνεκάλουν they were bringing chargesαὐτῷ to himκατήγαγον I led downεἰς intoτὸ theσυνέδριον Sanhedrinαὐτῶν· of them; 29  ὃν whomεὗρον I foundἐγκαλούμενον being chargedπερὶ aboutζητημάτων things soughtτοῦ of theνόμου Lawαὐτῶν, of them,μηδὲν nothingδὲ butἄξιον worthyθανάτου of deathorδεσμῶν of bondsἔχοντα havingἔγκλημα. charge. 30  μηνυθείσης Having been disclosedδέ butμοι to meἐπιβουλῆς of plotεἰς intoτὸν theἄνδρα male personἔσεσθαι to be in futureἐξαυτῆς out of very [hour]ἔπεμψα I sentπρὸς towardσέ, you,παραγγείλας having chargedκαὶ alsoτοῖς to theκατηγόροις accusersλέγειν to be sayingπρὸς towardαὐτὸν himἐπὶ uponσοῦ. you. 31  Οἱ Theμὲν indeedοὖν thereforeστρατιῶται soldiersκατὰ according toτὸ the (thing)διατεταγμένον having been orderedαὐτοῖς to themἀναλαβόντες having taken upτὸν theΠαῦλον Paulἤγαγον they ledδιὰ throughνυκτὸς nightεἰς intoτὴν the᾿Αντιπατρίδα· Antipatris; 32  τῇ to theδὲ butἐπαύριον morrowἐάσαντες having permittedτοὺς theἱππεῖς horsemenἀπέρχεσθαι to be going awayσὺν together withαὐτῷ himὑπέστρεψαν they returnedεἰς intoτὴν theπαρεμβολήν· encampment; 33  οἵτινες whoεἰσελθόντες having enteredεἰς intoτὴν theΚαισαρίαν Caesareaκαὶ andἀναδόντες having given upτὴν theἐπιστολὴν letterτῷ to theἡγεμόνι governorπαρέστησαν they stood besideκαὶ alsoτὸν theΠαῦλον Paulαὐτῷ. to him. 34  ἀναγνοὺς Having readδὲ butκαὶ andἐπερωτήσας having inquired uponἐκ out ofποίας what sort ofἐπαρχείας provinceἐστὶν he isκαὶ andπυθόμενος having inquiredὅτι thatἀπὸ fromΚιλικίας Cilicia 35  Διακούσομαί I shall hear thoroughlyσου, of you,ἔφη, he said,ὅταν wheneverκαὶ alsoοἱ theκατήγοροί accusersσου of youπαραγένωνται· should come to be alongside;κελεύσας having commandedἐν inτῷ theπραιτωρίῳ praetoriumτοῦ of theἩρῴδου Herodφυλάσσεσθαι to be being guardedαὐτόν. him.
