Acts 17:1-34

17  Διοδεύσαντες Having made their way throughδὲ butτὴν the᾿Αμφίπολιν Amphipolisκαὶ andτὴν the᾿Απολλωνίαν Apolloniaἦλθον they cameεἰς intoΘεσσαλονίκην, Thessalonica,ὅπου whereἦν wasσυναγωγὴ synagogueτῶν of theἸουδαίων. Jews. 2  κατὰ According toδὲ butτὸ the (thing)εἰωθὸς accustomedτῷ to theΠαύλῳ Paulεἰσῆλθεν he came inπρὸς towardαὐτοὺς themκαὶ andἐπὶ uponσάββατα sabbathsτρία threeδιελέξατο he reasonedαὐτοῖς to themἀπὸ fromτῶν theγραφῶν, Scriptures, 3  διανοίγων opening up thoroughlyκαὶ andπαρατιθέμενος putting alongsideὅτι thatτὸν theχριστὸν Christἔδει it was necessaryπαθεῖν to sufferκαὶ andἀναστῆναι to stand upἐκ out ofνεκρῶν, dead (ones),καὶ andὅτι thatοὗτός thisἐστιν istheχριστός, Christ,theἸησοῦς Jesusὃν whomἐγὼ Iκαταγγέλλω announce downὑμῖν. to YOU. 4  καί Andτινες someἐξ out ofαὐτῶν themἐπείσθησαν were persuadedκαὶ andπροσεκληρώθησαν they were assigned by lotτῷ to theΠαύλῳ Paulκαὶ andτῷ to theΣίλᾳ, Silas,τῶν of theτε andσεβομένων reverencingἙλλήνων Greeksπλῆθος multitudeπολὺ muchγυναικῶν of womenτε andτῶν of theπρώτων first (ones)οὐκ notὀλίγαι. few. 5  Ζηλώσαντες Having become jealousδὲ butοἱ theἸουδαῖοι Jewsκαὶ andπροσλαβόμενοι having taken toward themselvesτῶν of theἀγοραίων market idlersἄνδρας male personsτινὰς someπονηροὺς wickedκαὶ andὀχλοποιήσαντες having made crowdἐθορύβουν they were throwing into uproarτὴν theπόλιν, city,καὶ andἐπιστάντες having stood uponτῇ theοἰκίᾳ houseἸάσονος of Jasonἐζήτουν they were seekingαὐτοὺς themπροαγαγεῖν to lead forthεἰς intoτὸν theδῆμον· public; 6  μὴ notεὑρόντες having foundδὲ butαὐτοὺς themἔσυρον they were draggingἸάσονα Jasonκαί andτινας someἀδελφοὺς brothersἐπὶ uponτοὺς theπολιτάρχας, politarchs,βοῶντες crying aloudὅτι thatΟἱ The (ones)τὴν theοἰκουμένην inhabited (earth)ἀναστατώσαντες having upsetοὗτοι theseκαὶ alsoἐνθάδε in hereπάρεισιν, are alongside, 7  οὓς whomὑποδέδεκται has received under [roof]Ἰάσων· Jason;καὶ andοὗτοι theseπάντες allἀπέναντι in opposition toτῶν theδογμάτων decreesΚαίσαρος of Caesarπράσσουσι, are doing,βασιλέα kingἕτερον differentλέγοντες sayingεἶναι to beἸησοῦν. Jesus. 8  ἐτάραξαν They agitatedδὲ butτὸν theὄχλον crowdκαὶ andτοὺς theπολιτάρχας politarchsἀκούοντας hearingταῦτα, these (things), 9  καὶ andλαβόντες having takenτὸ theἱκανὸν sufficient (thing)παρὰ besideτοῦ of theἸάσονος Jasonκαὶ andτῶν of theλοιπῶν leftover (ones)ἀπέλυσαν they releasedαὐτούς. them. 10  Οἱ Theδὲ butἀδελφοὶ brothersεὐθέως immediatelyδιὰ throughνυκτὸς nightἐξέπεμψαν they sent outτόν theτε andΠαῦλον Paulκαὶ andτὸν theΣίλαν Silasεἰς intoΒέροιαν, Beroea,οἵτινες whoπαραγενόμενοι having come to be alongsideεἰς intoτὴν theσυναγωγὴν synagogueτῶν of theἸουδαίων Jewsἀπῄεσαν· they went off; 11  οὗτοι theseδὲ butἦσαν wereεὐγενέστεροι of better raceτῶν of the (ones)ἐν inΘεσσαλονίκῃ, Thessalonica,οἵτινες whoἐδέξαντο receivedτὸν theλόγον wordμετὰ withπάσης allπροθυμίας, mental readiness,τὸ theκαθ’ downἡμέραν dayἀνακρίνοντες examiningτὰς theγραφὰς Scripturesεἰ ifἔχοι it would haveταῦτα these (things)οὕτως. thus. 12  πολλοὶ Manyμὲν indeedοὖν thereforeἐξ out ofαὐτῶν themἐπίστευσαν, believed,καὶ andτῶν of theἙλληνίδων Grecianγυναικῶν womenτῶν of theεὐσχημόνων reputableκαὶ alsoἀνδρῶν of male personsοὐκ notὀλίγοι. few. 13  Ὡς Asδὲ butἔγνωσαν knewοἱ theἀπὸ fromτῆς theΘεσσαλονίκης ThessalonicaἸουδαῖοι Jewsὅτι thatκαὶ alsoἐν inτῇ theΒεροίᾳ Beroeaκατηγγέλη was publishedὑπὸ byτοῦ theΠαύλου Paultheλόγος wordτοῦ of theθεοῦ, God,ἦλθον they cameκἀκεῖ and thereσαλεύοντες shaking upκαὶ andταράσσοντες agitatingτοὺς theὄχλους. crowds. 14  εὐθέως Immediatelyδὲ butτότε thenτὸν theΠαῦλον Paulἐξαπέστειλαν sent off outοἱ theἀδελφοὶ brothersπορεύεσθαι to be goingἕως untilἐπὶ uponτὴν theθάλασσαν· sea;ὑπέμεινάν remained behindτε andtheτε andΣίλας Silasκαὶ andtheΤιμόθεος Timothyἐκεῖ. there. 15  οἱ The (ones)δὲ butκαθιστάνοντες conductingτὸν theΠαῦλον Paulἤγαγον they ledἕως until᾿Αθηνῶν, Athens,καὶ andλαβόντες having receivedἐντολὴν commandmentπρὸς towardτὸν theΣίλαν Silasκαὶ andτὸν theΤιμόθεον Timothyἵνα in order thatὡς asτάχιστα most quicklyἔλθωσιν they should comeπρὸς towardαὐτὸν himἐξῄεσαν. they went out. 16  ᾿Εν Inδὲ butταῖς the᾿Αθήναις Athensἐκδεχομένου waiting forαὐτοὺς themτοῦ of theΠαύλου, Paul,παρωξύνετο was being irritatedτὸ theπνεῦμα spiritαὐτοῦ of himἐν inαὐτῷ himθεωροῦντος beholdingκατείδωλον full of idolsοὖσαν beingτὴν theπόλιν. city. 17  διελέγετο He was reasoningμὲν indeedοὖν thereforeἐν inτῇ theσυναγωγῇ synagogueτοῖς to theἸουδαίοις Jewsκαὶ andτοῖς the (ones)σεβομένοις reverencingκαὶ andἐν inτῇ theἀγορᾷ marketplaceκατὰ downπᾶσαν everyἡμέραν dayπρὸς towardτοὺς the (ones)παρατυγχάνοντας. happening (to be) alongside. 18  τινὲς Someδὲ butκαὶ alsoτῶν of the᾿Επικουρίων Epicureanκαὶ andΣτωικῶν Stoicφιλοσόφων philosophersσυνέβαλλον were throwing togetherαὐτῷ, to him,καί andτινες someἔλεγον were sayingΤί Whatἂν likelyθέλοι would willtheσπερμολόγος seed pickerοὗτος thisλέγειν; to be saying?οἱ The (ones)δέ, but,Ξένων Of foreignδαιμονίων demonsδοκεῖ he is seemingκαταγγελεὺς publisherεἶναι· to be;ὅτι becauseτὸν theἸησοῦν Jesusκαὶ andτὴν theἀνάστασιν resurrectionεὐηγγελίζετο. he was declaring as good news. 19  ἐπιλαβόμενοι Having taken holdδὲ butαὐτοῦ of himἐπὶ uponτὸν theἌρειον AreanΠάγον Pagosἤγαγον, they led,λέγοντες sayingΔυνάμεθα Are we ableγνῶναι to knowτίς whattheκαινὴ newαὕτη thistheὑπὸ byσοῦ youλαλουμένη being spokenδιδαχή; teaching? 20  ξενίζοντα Being strange (things)γάρ forτινα someεἰσφέρεις you are importingεἰς intoτὰς theἀκοὰς hearingsἡμῶν· of us;βουλόμεθα we are wishingοὖν thereforeγνῶναι to knowτίνα what (things)θέλει is willingταῦτα these (things)εἶναι. to be. 21  ᾿Αθηναῖοι Atheniansδὲ butπάντες allκαὶ andοἱ theἐπιδημοῦντες sojourningξένοι foreignersεἰς intoοὐδὲν nothingἕτερον differentηὐκαίρουν they had leisure timethanλέγειν to be sayingτι somethingorἀκούειν to be hearingτι somethingκαινότερον. newer. 22  σταθεὶς Having stoodδὲ butΠαῦλος Paulἐν inμέσῳ middleτοῦ of the᾿Αρείου AreanΠάγου Pagosἔφη he said Ἄνδρες Male persons᾿Αθηναῖοι, Athenians,κατὰ downπάντα all (things)ὡς asδεισιδαιμονεστέρους more demon-dreadingὑμᾶς YOUθεωρῶ· I am beholding; 23  διερχόμενος going throughγὰρ forκαὶ andἀναθεωρῶν beholding upτὰ theσεβάσματα objects of venerationὑμῶν of YOUεὗρον I foundκαὶ alsoβωμὸν altarἐν inwhichἐπεγέγραπτο it had been written upon᾿Αγνώστῳ To UnknownΘεῷ. God.Whichοὖν thereforeἀγνοοῦντες being ignorantεὐσεβεῖτε, YOU are venerating,τοῦτο this (thing)ἐγὼ Iκαταγγέλλω am announcing downὑμῖν. to YOU. 24  Theθεὸς Godthe (one)ποιήσας having madeτὸν theκόσμον worldκαὶ andπάντα allτὰ the (things)ἐν inαὐτῷ, it,οὗτος this (One)οὐρανοῦ of heavenκαὶ andγῆς of earthὑπάρχων existingκύριος Lordοὐκ notἐν inχειροποιήτοις handmadeναοῖς divine habitationsκατοικεῖ is inhabiting 25  οὐδὲ norὑπὸ byχειρῶν handsἀνθρωπίνων humanθεραπεύεται is being attended toπροσδεόμενός having further needτινος, of anything,αὐτὸς heδιδοὺς givingπᾶσι to allζωὴν lifeκαὶ andπνοὴν breathκαὶ andτὰ the (things)πάντα· all; 26  ἐποίησέν he madeτε andἐξ out ofἑνὸς oneπᾶν everyἔθνος nationἀνθρώπων of menκατοικεῖν to be dwellingἐπὶ uponπαντὸς allπροσώπου faceτῆς of theγῆς, earth,ὁρίσας having definedπροστεταγμένους having been set towardκαιροὺς appointed timesκαὶ andτὰς theὁροθεσίας limitsτῆς of theκατοικίας dwellingαὐτῶν, of them, 27  ζητεῖν to be seekingτὸν theθεὸν Godεἰ ifἄρα reallyγε in factψηλαφήσειαν they might grope forαὐτὸν himκαὶ andεὕροιεν, they might find,καί andγε in factοὐ notμακρὰν long [way]ἀπὸ fromἑνὸς oneἑκάστου eachἡμῶν of usὑπάρχοντα. existing. 28  ἐν Inαὐτῷ himγὰρ forζῶμεν we are livingκαὶ andκινούμεθα we are movingκαὶ andἐσμέν, we are,ὡς asκαί alsoτινες someτῶν of theκαθ’ downὑμᾶς YOUποιητῶν poetsεἰρήκασιν have saidΤοῦ Of the (one)γὰρ forκαὶ alsoγένος raceἐσμέν. we are. 29  γένος Raceοὖν thereforeὑπάρχοντες existingτοῦ of theθεοῦ Godοὐκ notὀφείλομεν we are owingνομίζειν to be opiningχρυσῷ to goldorἀργύρῳ to silverorλίθῳ, to stone,χαράγματι to sculptured (thing)τέχνης of artκαὶ andἐνθυμήσεως of contrivanceἀνθρώπου, of man,τὸ theθεῖον divine [being]εἶναι to beὅμοιον. like. 30  τοὺς Theμὲν indeedοὖν thereforeχρόνους timesτῆς of theἀγνοίας ignoranceὑπεριδὼν having overlookedtheθεὸς Godτὰ the (things)νῦν nowἀπαγγέλλει he is reportingτοῖς to theἀνθρώποις menπάντας all (them)πανταχοῦ everywhereμετανοεῖν, to be repenting, 31  καθότι according to whichἔστησεν he made standἡμέραν dayἐν inwhichμέλλει he is aboutκρίνειν to be judgingτὴν theοἰκουμένην inhabited [earth]ἐν inδικαιοσύνῃ righteousnessἐν inἀνδρὶ male personto whomὥρισεν, he defined,πίστιν faithπαρασχὼν having furnishedπᾶσιν to allἀναστήσας having made stand upαὐτὸν himἐκ out ofνεκρῶν. dead (ones). 32  ἀκούσαντες Having heardδὲ butἀνάστασιν resurrectionνεκρῶν of dead (ones)οἱ the (ones)μὲν indeedἐχλεύαζον were mockingοἱ the (ones)δὲ butεἶπαν said᾿Ακουσόμεθά We shall hearσου of youπερὶ aboutτούτου thisκαὶ alsoπάλιν. again. 33  οὕτως ThustheΠαῦλος Paulἐξῆλθεν made exitἐκ out ofμέσου middleαὐτῶν· of them; 34  τινὲς someδὲ butἄνδρες male personsκολληθέντες having been gluedαὐτῷ to himἐπίστευσαν, they believed,ἐν inοἷς whomκαὶ alsoΔιονύσιος Dionysiusthe᾿Αρεοπαγίτης Areopagiteκαὶ andγυνὴ womanὀνόματι to nameΔάμαρις Damarisκαὶ andἕτεροι different (ones)σὺν together withαὐτοῖς. them.
