Jeremiah 28:1-17
28 In the same year, early in the reign of King Sidkijah of Judah, in the year four, in the fifth month, the prophet Hananiah the son of ʽAzzur from Gibeon said to me before the eyes of the priests and all the people
2 “Says Israel’s God Jehovah of Armies, I have broken the king of Babylon’s yoke;
3 in two years’ time more I am going to bring back to this place all the vessels of Jehovah’s house that King Nebucadnessar of Babylon took from this place and brought to Babylon;
4 and Jeconiah the son of Jehojakim, king of Judah, and all the deportees of Judah who came to Babylon, I am going to bring back to this place, quoth Jehovah, because I will break the king of Babylon’s yoke.”
5 And the prophet Jeremiah said to the prophet Hananiah before the eyes of the priests and of all the people that were standing in Jehovah’s house
6 “Amen; may Jehovah do so; may Jehovah make good your words that you have prophesied, bringing back the vessels of Jehovah’s house and all the deportees from Babylon to this place.
7 Only listen to this word that I am going to speak for you and all the people to hear.
8 * The prophets that there were before you and me, in the old times, prophesied about many countries and great kingdoms for war, mischief, and pestilence.
9 The prophet that prophesies for good times—when the prophet’s word comes in, the prophet will be known to have been really sent by Jehovah.”
10 And the prophet Hananiah took the oxbow off the prophet Jeremiah’s neck and smashed it;
11 and Hananiah said before the eyes of all the people “Says Jehovah, Like that I will break King Nebucadnessar of Babylon’s yoke off the necks of all the nations.” And the prophet Jeremiah went his way.
12 But Jehovah’s word came to Jeremiah after the prophet Hananiah broke the oxbow off the prophet Jeremiah’s neck,
13 “Go and say to Hananiah ‘Says Jehovah, You have broken wooden bows, but you are to make iron ones instead.
14 For Israel’s God Jehovah of Armies says, I have put an iron yoke on the necks of all these nations to be subjects of King Nebucadnessar of Babylon, and his subjects they shall be; and I have given him the wild beasts too.’”
15 And the prophet Jeremiah said to the prophet Hananiah “Listen, Hananiah: Jehovah did not send you, and you have been making this people put confidence in a falsehood:
16 so Jehovah says, Here I am sending you off the earth. This year you die, because you have spoken wrongfully against Jehovah.”
17 And the prophet Hananiah died in that year, in the seventh month.
